Situated 18 km south of Dharmashala, Kangra
was once the capital of a powerful hill state and was famous
for its Pahari style of miniature paintings and its magnificent
temples. Today however some priceless murals, a few temples
and a fort are the only remains of its grand past.
ACCESS
Kangra Airport, 7 km is the nearest airport. Pathankot (86 km)
is the nearest broad gauge railhead. It is well connected by
road. Dharamshala is at a distance of 18 km.
PLACES OF INTEREST
Brajreshwari Devi Temple: Known for its legendary wealth
this temple was looted on several occasions by invaders from
the north. Rebuilt in 1920 after it was completely destroyed
it continues to be an important place of pilgrimage till today.
EXCURSIONS
Jwalamukhi (30 km) - is a popular place of pilgrimage. Nadaun
(48 km) - serene and secluded weekend spot. Siyanpur Tira -
is worth a visit for the fine wall paintings on the temples
of Gauri Shankar, Narbadeshwar and Musti Manohar.
