The eastern most hill district of U.P. bordering
Nepal in the east and Tibet in the north,Pithoragarh is often
called 'Miniature Kashmir'. Nesting amidst the spectacular Kumaon
Himalayas at a height of 5412 ft., the town was an important
landmark of the Chand Kings of Kumaon.The ancient trade route
to eastern Nepal passed through this area.
Pithoragarh and its environs are known for their abundant natural
beauty and fine temples that are important point of pilgrimages.
ACCESS
The nearest railway station is Tanakpur, 151 kms. By road Pithoragarh
is connected to all parts of the state,Delhi and Bareilly. Regular
bus service connects it to all important centres in the region.
PLACES OF INTEREST
Rai Gufa - a queer limestone deposit, ULKA Devi Temple located
on a hill top, Chandak, Thal Kedar and Dhwaj.
EXCURSIONS
Abbot Mount (56 kms.): Situated among thick forests of oak and
deodar, Abbot Mount is one of Kumaon's idyllic hill resorts
for peaceful secluded holidays. Berinag (102 kms.): Set amidst
tea gardens, it is noted for the grand view of the Himalayas.
Devidhura (58 kms.): is at a height of 1615 mts. above sea-level.
It is famous for the temple of Barahi Devi. Didihat (54 kms.):
Presents a spectacular view of Panchchuli peak. Gangolihat (77
kms.): An important religious centre Jauljibi (68 kms.): A large
fair is held here annually.
