Punjab means `the land of the five rivers',
namely the Jhelum, Ravi, Chenab, Sutlej, and the Beas. The state
now consists of only threeBeas, Sutlej and Raviwith their massive
hydro-electric projects generously supplying electricity to
the whole state and even to some neighbouring ones. With the
Green Revolution and the latest agricultural machinery being
put to use, Punjab has often been described as the Granary of
India.
The people of Punjab are intense and earthy, loving the land
that gave them life and making it their partner in their music,
dances, celebrations and festivals. Thousands of devotees flock
to the Golden Temple of Amritsar everyday. The Rig Veda and
the epic Ramayana were also composed here.
